A controller (4) is electrically connected to a proximity detector (5) under the outlet (15) of a faucet housing (1), a position detecting switch subassembly (21) in the housing, and to a servovalve (3) in the conduit (11,12) of the housing. A lever-mounted control element (20) connects the disk type manual valve (2) in the conduit. When the control element moves to a fully closed position, the controller deactivates the proximity detector and closes the servovalve. When the control element moves to an intermediate, partly open position, and the proximity detector senses the presence of an object under the outlet, the controller opens the servovalve. When the control element is moved to a fully open position, the controller deactivates the proximity detector and opens the servovalve.
