Artificial leather that is capable of being deep drawn comprises a fleece of endless partially drawn filaments coated with a deep drawable film of a polymer or polymer mixture e.g. of polyvinyl chloride, which may be plasticised with butadiene-acrylonitrile-styrene, polyurethane. The artificial leather is produced (1) by coating the fleece with a film-forming polymer or polymer mixture and solidfiying the polymer or polymer mixture on the fleece to form a deep-drawable film thereon; (2) by laminating the fleece to a preformed deep drawable film of a polymer or polymer mixture; or (3) forming a polyvinyl chloride film by calendering, coating the film with a sticky polyvinyl chloride paste and then pressing on to the coated side of the film a fleece of endless partially drawn filaments. The filaments in the fleece are bonded together at spaced apart points by a binder e.g. with a dispersion of butadiene-acrylonitrile containing polymerised acrylic acid. The fleece may have been formed initially by extruding dissolved or molten fibre forming polymeric material to form a sheet or sheets of filaments, stretching the filaments so that they are partially drawn, and at least partially setting the filaments by forcing streams of gas or vapour on each side of each sheet and passing each sheet and its associated streams down a guide duct, and filaments thereby being maintained parallel to one another, and collecting the filaments into a fleece without the filaments having previously contacted one another. The film may be embossed during the lamination stage using an embossed calender roll to press the film against the fleece. The fleece may be composed of polyamides, polypropylene, polyurethanes and polyesters.
