PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare a biaxially oriented polyester film free from the dissolution of substance affecting the taste of a food such as drink and especially suitable for biaxially oriented film. SOLUTION: The objective biaxially oriented polyester film is composed of a polyester produced by using a titanium compound as the transesterification catalyst and a germanium compound as the polycondensation catalyst. The acetaldehyde content of the film is <=10 ppm and the n-heptane extraction amount of the film is <=0.5 mg/inch2 (mg/645mm2) under the extraction condition of 66 deg.C×2 hr.
