PURPOSE: A portable reading device is provided to search for and select a desired index conveniently by outputting the index information of a book as voices or characters, to output the contents of the book as voices by executing voice synthesis for the character data of the selected index, and to adjust the regeneration speed of pronunciation in voice synthesis. CONSTITUTION: In a portable reading device(5), a RAM(8), an OS(Operating System) ROM(10), a book data ROM(12), a voice data ROM(14), an LCD driver(20), a voice synthesis part(24), and a key input part(30) are connected through a bus(4) with a CPU(18) in the center. Also the portable reading device(5) contains a parallel port(32) to connect with a printer(36) and an interface(38) to connect with an external communication network(40). The book data ROM(12) stores the character data and image data of one or several books. The voice data ROM(14) stores voice data in the form of a digital pronunciation value corresponding to each character. If the CPU(18) reads voice data from the voice data ROM(14) and provides the data to the voice synthesis part(24), the voice synthesis part(24) synthesizes the voice data inputted from the CPU(18) with an analog voice signal and outputs them to an earphone jack(26) and/or a speaker(28). The OS ROM(10) contains an OS program to control the whole operation of the portable reading device(5). The CPU(18) executes overall operations by the OS program of the OS ROM(10).
