摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element having high transmittance, high contrast and satisfactory viewing angle characteristics. SOLUTION: Relating to the display element having a liquid crystal sealed between two substrates with electrodes formed, the liquid crystal has negative dielectric anisotropy and chiral property and is subjected to perpendicular alignment. When an electric field is applied, the liquid crystal shows twist alignment with different directions of the molecules on the upper and lower substrates. Projections are formed on the substrate, to regulate the alignment direction of the liquid crystal on the interface into two or more different directions. When the twist angle between the upper and lower interfaces is 90 deg. and the cell thickness d satisfies specified relation, the transmittance through polarizing plates in the cross position is always 1 (maximum), regardless of the alignment direction of the liquid crystal on the interfaces. Therefore, even if the alignment direction of the liquid crystal is specified by dividing into regions on the interface of the substrate, maximum transmittance is obtained.
