PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set a proper print mode by achieving a highly accurate judgment of the type of a printing medium used for image formation. SOLUTION: The surface of a printing medium 4 is traced by a detection stylus 5 mounted on a mobile magnet 6 prior to printing and irregularities of the surface are converted to an electric signal. The resulting value of a change in voltage is used as discriminating element of the printing medium. For example, this facilitates discrimination between ordinary paper and coated paper previously regarded hard to judge despite their high frequency of use. In other words, a large electric change is noted from the surface of the ordinary paper because of fiber of the paper making the surface rough whereas there is limited electric change in the coated paper because the coating treatment for the surface of the printing medium makes the surface thereof smooth. By utilizing this difference in condition, the discrimination of the type of the printing medium is made possible at a higher accuracy. Thus, a proper printing mode can be set to match the type or the printing medium based on the results of the discrimination.
