PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the leakage of atomized fuel from a cavity 14 on the crown surface of a piston 10 to ensure the stratification in a stratified combustion by injecting fuel from a fuel injection valve 7 into the cavity 14 and collecting the atomized fuel around an ignition plug 2 by use of a gas flow having a swirl component in a combustion chamber. SOLUTION: The atomized fuel from the fuel injection valve 7 is injected toward the ignition plug 2 in the top plan view. The cavity 14 is formed into a circular shape having a center C0 on a straight line L2 obtained by rotating a straight line L1 connecting the fuel injection valve 7 to the ignition plug 2 about the ignition plug 2 by a prescribed angleθ=10-30 deg. in the swirl downstream direction. Otherwise, the cavity 14 is formed into an elliptic shape long on the swirl downstream side.
