PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine cylinder discriminating device and discriminating method for automobile in which an engine cylinder can be judged without installing a cylinder discriminating sensor to a distributor connected to a camshaft in a 3-cylinder 4-stroke engine. SOLUTION: This device comprises a means for applying current when the first cylinder is continuously in the top dead center in each stroke of the 3-cylinder 4-stroke engine, a means for sensing the instantaneous engine speed in the application of current by the above means, and a control means for driving the engine by discriminating an exhaust stroke when the engine speed sensed by the means is not raised, discriminating a compression stroke when the engine speed is suddenly raised, and successively igniting the second and third cylinders.
