A step-by-step conveyer 20, Figs. 2, 3, 4a, 4b, 6 for transporting articles A on pallets P comprises spaced pairs of article-supporting slides 30. Pusher bars 40 are pivoted on a ram 35 reciprocated by a drive from a motor 65. Parallel rails 33 co-operate with rollers 45 to control movement of the pusher bars 40 between pallet engaging and pallet non-engaging positions. At regular intervals the horizontal flange 33a of each of the opposed rails 33 is cut away to provide alternating notches 47, 48. The notches 47 of one rail are substantially opposite the notches 48 of the other rail. Each pusher bar 40 has one roller 45 and successive rollers 45 are arranged on alternate sides of the centre line of the conveyer and is associated at the forward end of the working stroke of the ram 35 with a pivoted ramp 49 in a notch 48 and at the other end with a pivoted rail section 50 normally in the inoperative position shown in Fig. 4a. At the end of the forward stroke each roller 45 has passed under the associated ramp 49, lifting it out of the way, the ramp falling back into position as shown in Fig. 4b. Reversal of the ram 35 causes the rollers to run up the ramps 49 through the notches 48 to swing the pusher bars 40 into inoperative, return position, Fig. 14. At the end of the recovery stroke of the ram 35 the rollers 45 drop through the notches 47 to pivot the pusher bars 40 into operative position, unless a particular notch 47 is closed by operation of a solenoid 58 to pivot the associated rail section 50 into operative position to keep the associated pusher bar 40 in inoperative position. Fig. 10 shows a crank means for reciprocating the ram 35. A pair of-endless chains 78 carry a cam follower roller 79 engaged in a cam slot 80 attached to the ram 35. The cam slot 80 has an upper vertical section 80a and a lower vertical section 80b which are interconnected by an offset section 80c to decrease the speed -of movement of the pusher bars 40 at the time of their engagement with the pallets P. Fig. 18 shows a modification wherein pivoted ramps 149 at notches 148 all at the one side of a ram 135 co-operate with control rollers 145 of pusher bars 140 to pivot them into inoperative position on the return stroke of the ram 135. The rollers 145 drop through the notches 148 for the next working stroke. |
