A motor vehicle has a power train with an engine 1, a gearbox 3 shiftable into and from a selected one of a plurality of gears, a clutch 2 having engaged and disengaged conditions. The clutch 2 and/or the gearbox 3 are operated by an actuator receiving signals from a control unit which generates at least one defect signal, on the basis of signals received from the clutch and/or gearbox, denoting a malfunction of the clutch and/or gearbox. The actuator comprises a driving unit and a movable output element arranged to receive motion from the driving unit by way of a transmission and to normally transmit motion to an input element. A movable operating component is also included in the driving unit or the transmission or both.
