<p>A device (1; 30; 60; 90; 120; 140) for winding pipe sealant filamentary materials (12; 44, 65, 94; 123) onto a pipe (47; 70; 102; 132; 161) comprising: (a) a retainer (2; 31; 61; 121; 142) for retaining a length of filamentary material; and (b) an elongate dispensing aid (7; 32; 62; 92; 122; 141) projecting from said retainer, the dispensing aid comprising at least one guide (8; 51; 78; 107; 135) located at a position spaced from the retainer and through which the filamentary material passes. The material is for sealing threaded pipe joints.The device may be motorised for rotational motion, for example by attachment to a power tool. The device may also have a locating portion (37; 63; 95; 124) for engaging an end of a pipe to which the filamentary material is to be applied. The locating portion may act as an automatic adjuster of the position of the device. Relative rotation of the dispensing aid and the automatic adjuster actuates the automatic adjuster.
