PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it compatible to satisfy both high-speed reproduction and low power consumption required from the market in a optical storage device such as a DVD-ROM drive. SOLUTION: An optical storage device is provided with a 'normal mode' weighting on performance such as high speed reproduction and a 'low power consumption mode' weighting on reduction in power consumption. When it is necessary to reduce the power consumption depending on a state of the power source to be supplied to the optical storage device and a disk to be reproduced, the power consumption is reduced by letting the optical storage device operate in the 'low power consumption mode'. When the high-speed reproduction is possible, the high speed reproduction is realized by operating the optical storage device in 'normal mode'.
