PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an area gradation image forming method by which an excellent area gradation image is stably obtained independently of a change of the performance of a photosensitive material due to the changeover of a production lot. SOLUTION: In the area gradation image forming method in which a silver halide photosensitive material with a yellow image forming silver halide emulsion layer, a magenta image forming silver halide emulsion layer and a cyan image forming silver halide emulsion layer on the base is used, image forming conditions are determined as conditions for obtaining an image close to a standard image and scanning exposure is carried out, image forming conditions which allow the chromaticity of the primary color of an image with 50% dots to satisfyΔEab*<=2.5 to the standard image are adopted.
