Polypeptides represented by SEQ ID NO:3 (HmrA) and SEQ ID NO:4 (HmrB); polynucleotides encoding these polypeptides; and antagonists of these polypeptides. HmrA and HmrB are polypeptides which impart potent resistance to methicillin. The antagonists of HmrA and HmrB are usable, either alone or in combination with antibiotics such as other beta -lactam antibiotics, as remedies for infection with highly methicillin-resistance <i>Staphylococcus aureus</i> (MRSA).
