PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for hydrogenating a thermoplastic norbornene- based resin, not requiring the removal of a used hydrogenation catalyst, having a small amount of byproducts by the hydrogenation, obtaining a hydrogenated resin having an excellent transparency and capable of almost attaining a high hydrogenation rate by no means inferior to that of the conventional hydrogenation method using a fluidized catalyst in making a comparison. SOLUTION: This method for hydrogenating the thermoplastic norbornene- based resin is (1) to pass a solution of the thermoplastic norbornene-based resin and hydrogen through a fixed bed type reactor filled with hydrogenation catalyst particles or (2) to insert a fixed layer filled with the hydrogenation catalyst particles into a reactor filled with the solution of the above resin and compress hydrogen into the reactor.
