PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely and rapidly detect the occurrence of the breakout in continuos casting with relative simple device constitution even under an adverse environment right under a mold. SOLUTION: A coated optical fiber 3 coated with a metallic pipe of stainless steel, etc., is installed in proximity to the outer peripheral surface of a slab 2 right under a casting mold 1 of continuos casting equipment. Radiation light energy 10 made incident on the inside of the coated optical fiber 3 by the erosion of the coated optical fiber 3 by the leakage of steed from the slab 2 is detected by a radiation thermometer 5 and is converted to a temperature signal 11. The temperature signal outputted from the radiation thermometer 5 and the temperature threshold are compared in an arithmetic processing unit 6 which decides the presence or absence of the occurrence of the breakout and outputs a breakout detection signal in case of the temperature signal > temperature threshold.
