MPEG transport stream encoder

A method and apparatus are disclosed for generating a Packetized Elementary Stream (PES) from an MPEG Elementary Stream ES and then generating an MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS) from packets of the Packetised Elementary Stream. Each PES packet comprises an integer number of ES fields or frames. The PES packet generator 10 generates PES headers vpes_hdr and apes_hdr and the control signal generator 12 generates signals, vpes_vld and apes_vld which denote the valid period of the PES headers. The ES and the PES headers are stored in memory 16, 18 until a timing signal is received indicating that the information is required by the TS packet generator 28. The TS packet generator adds TS headers to produce TS packets.
