PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogenating catalyst which shows high hydrogenating activity and also high yield of generalboil and further, is suitable for reducing the content of an aromatic compound by hydrogenating a hydrocarbon oil, especially a light gas oil fraction. SOLUTION: This hydrogenating catalyst is characterized in that a precious metal of Group VIII in the periodic table as an active component is borne by an oxide carrier composed mainly of boria, silica and alumina. The boria content of the oxide carrier composed mainly of the boria, silica and alumina is within the range of 5-15 wt.% in terms of oxide and the silica content is within the range of 9-25 wt.% in terms of the oxide. Further, the remainder is alumina and the pore characteristics of the oxide carrier are that the average pore diameter is within the range of 70-100Åin the pore distribution measured by a mercury forcing method and the volume occupied by the pore of the average pore diameter±10Årepresents at least 50% of the total pore volume. In addition, the active components borne by the oxide carrier are one or two or more selected from the precious metals of Group VIII in the periodic table and their carried amount is 0.1-2 wt.% in terms of metallic element.
