A programmed sequential switching device comprises rotary switches 1, 2, whichare driven according to a programme determined by the relative positions of inter-connecting wheels mechanically linking the switches with a common drive, and which operate alternately to scan input signals applied to lines 101 to 108, each switch 1, 2 being connected in series with a timing switch 9 connected to an output line 200 and completing the circuit through switches 1 or 2 only when the rotary contacts 19, 29 are at rest, each contact 19 or 29 when moving between two rest positions passing over a programmed number of the switch contacts 11 to 15 or 22 to 25, the number being determined by the wheel mechanism connecting the contacts 19, 29 with the said common drive which is also that of the timing switch 9. The moving contacts 19, 29, and 39 are so driven that the contact 19 or 29 moves only when the output line 200 is connected to the other contact 29 or 19 which is at rest. The driving means comprises a motor driven pinion 500 Fig. 2 (not shown), having peripheral notches and projecting teeth for producing a desired intermittent motion of co-operating toothed and notched wheels. In an alternative embodiment Fig. 4 (not shown), four rotary switches associated with a single rotary timing switch scan the lines of a switching matrix. This embodiment may include a device as described in Specification 864, 315 for driving the rotary switches in accordance with recorded programmes. A further embodiment Fig. 7 (not shown) comprises a rotary timing switch associated with three rotary scanning switches.
