PURPOSE: A power train for a five speed automatic transmission is provided to minimize the power loss by excluding elements rotated more fast than the last output element at over drive and reduce the power loss caused by a friction element and the size and weight of a power train by reducing the number of friction elements. CONSTITUTION: A power train for a five speed automatic transmission comprises: a first planetary gear set which is formed with the combination of two simple planetary gear sets so that forming four operation elements(A,D,E,F) and connected to an input shaft for a first operation element(A) to usually act as an input element; a second planetary gear set which is formed with the combination of other two simple planetary gear sets so that forming four operation elements(G,H,I,J) and whose the first operation element(G) usually acts as an output element, a second and a third operation elements(H,I) enable to be variably connected to a first and a second operation elements(A,D) of the first planetary gear set, and a fourth operation element(J) is fixedly connected to a third operation element(E) of the first planetary gear set; clutch members(C1,C2) variably and respectively connected between the first and second elements of the first planetary gear set and the second and third elements of the second planetary gear set to control the power transmitted from the first and second elements of the first planetary gear set to the second and third elements of the second planetary gear set; and brake members(B1,B2) variably and respectively connected between the fourth operation element of the first planetary gear set and the third operation element of the second planetary gear set and a transmission housing for the fourth operation element of the first planetary gear set and the third operation element of the second planetary gear set to be selectively operated as a reaction force element.
