PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retractable scale assembly having high durability by covering a selected length of a retractable tape blade to be reinforced. SOLUTION: This retractable scale assembly includes a housing assembly 12 and a reel 14 rotatably mounted in the interior of the housing assembly. An elongated blade 16 is formed by a metal ribbon with one end connected to the reel, and a metal ribbon-made coil spring 32 is disposed between the housing assembly and the reel. In order to extend the blade outward from an opening of the housing assembly and hold the same in a position, a blade holding assembly 124 is constituted to be manually operated. A comparatively short blade free end part has a transparent film made of plastic material adhered in its recessed surface. The transparent film made of plastics protects the covered portion of the blade from being cracked or torn, and protects numerals and measuring line put on the blade end part form being worn away.
