PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a long service life lead battery, having superior high-rate discharging characteristic. SOLUTION: To 1g of wood flour, 10 ml of cresol is added, and after cresol fully penetrates inside the wood flour, 20 ml of sulfuric acid, whose concentration is 70 wt.%, is added per 1g of wood flour, then through intensive agitation in an approximately 25 deg.C atmosphere for 20 minutes, a reaction is made to take place to a full extant. After the agitation is stopped and lignin is precipitated by adding an excess of ethyl ether to a layer of cresol solution containing the separated lignin, it is dried, and lignin is obtained. The lignin is added to an anode plate, or an anode plate and a separator to bring an enclosed lead battery for completion. Inactivation and stability of the functional group of lignin are not impaired, and the lignin assumes a structure approximating that of linear shape polymer body.
