[Also in Division C1] A crystalline metal aluminosilicate molecular sieve having a pore size of 3-15Š which has been surface treated with an organosilicon compound (see Division C1) is used to adsorb normal hydrocarbons from a mixture of normal and non-normal C 7 -C 22 hydrocarbons employing the customary adsorption/desorption or gas chromatography techniques. Using the former technique, the sieve may be contacted with the mixture of hydrocarbons at 20 psig, then purged at 5 psig to remove any surfaceadsorbed non-normals, then desorbed at 30 psig to remove the normals. The gas used to purge and desorb may be a normal hydrocarbon with 1-3 carbon atoms less than the lightest hydrocarbon in the mixture, or 1-8 carbon atoms more than the heaviest. In gas chromatographic separations, the carrier gas used is helium. The exemplified mixture in both cases is a C 10 -C 13 kerosene fraction Exemplified organosilicon treating agents are trimethyl chlorosilane and hexamethyldisilazane.</p>
