The stator construction has a yoke (30) with winding slots (34) provided between adjacent teeth (32), the sides of each winding slot extending at an angle to one another, e.g. of 2 degrees and the open bottom end of the winding slot having a width which corresponds to that of a single flat, rounded stator winding wire (40). A slot cladding (36) is inserted in each stator winding slot before packing with stacked stator winding wires.
