The present invention provides methods of diagnosing and/or monitoring infection of an individual by Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis in which the presence or concentration of (i) polypeptides comprising the amino acid sequence of Figure 1 or Svenlkealpeyakdlklnl or related molecules, or (ii) antibodies directed to such polypeptides, or (iii) nucleic acid molecules encoding such polypeptides, or (iv) infection responses resulting from presentation of such polypeptides, are detected. Also provided are pharmaceutical compositions containing such entities for prophylactic purposes, uses of the same, novel polypeptides, antibodies and nucleic acid molecules and kits for performing methods of the invention.
