The pipe coupling system for two pipes (2,4) comprises inner flanges (6,8) welded to the pipe ends. An outer connecting ring (10) made up of two half shells (11,12) is fitted over these. The inner flanges form an annular chamber with the pipe walls which has a U-shaped cross-section. Sealing rings (15,20) fit into this with a compression ring (21) between them.
