Radiation-resistant functional fluids (including lubricants for various purposes, hydraulic fluids, coolants, moderators, and heat transfer media) comprise (a) at least one partially hydrogenated terphenyl, together with (b) one or more of the following: a hydrocarbon mineral oil (e.g. lubricating oil or kerosene), 1-20 weight per cent of an unhydrogenated polyphenyl or alkylated polyphenyl, 1-30 weight per cent of a polystyrene or polyalkylstyrene, an alkyl or aryl selenide, or an aryl disulphide; the degree of hydrogenation of (a) being such that the hydrogen content of the total polyphenyl components present is at least 30% of the theoretical amount for complete hydrogenation thereof. Benzotriazole may also be present. |
