The device comprises crank gearing (20 to 29) having a shift mechanism (39) for axially driving the wiper roller wherein the shift mechanism is shifted by a setting drive (47) such as work spindle which is connected to same through one or more connector elements (55,61) which have a degree of freedom f which is at least twice its mobility. The connector element can be a traction member whereby the degree of freedom is determined through the deformation of same across the load direction when the traction member is subject to shear stress.
