PURPOSE: Provided is novel cyanine dyes, more particularly, unsymmetrical indolenin pentamethine cyanine dyes that exert excellent recording features when used in high-speed-recordable-type optical recording media. CONSTITUTION: The unsymmetrical indolenin pentamethine cyanine dye is represented by formula(1) or (2), wherein R1 and R2 represent an identical or different alkyl group which may have a substituent; R3 represents a substituent selected from the group consisting of nitro, cyano, trifluoromethyl, trifluoromethoxy, carbonate, carbonic acid amide, sulfonamide and alkylsulfonyl; R4 represents hydrogen or a substituent selected from the group consisting of halogens and methyl; and X¬- represents a counter ion.
