PURPOSE: To provide a character display device, a character display method and a recording medium in which a character is highly precisely displayed in subpixel units and coloring is provided for the character or the background of the character. CONSTITUTION: The character display device is provided with a display device having plural pixels and a control section that controls the display device. The plural pixels include plural subpixels that are arranged in a prescribed direction. A subpixel is before hand assigned one color element and the intensity of the element is stepwise displayed by plural color element levels. The control section independently sets one level for each of the plural subpixels among plural color element levels. In accordance with the corresponding relationship between the plural color element levels and the plural luminance levels, the color element level set to a subpixel is converted into one luminance level corresponding to the plural luminance levels and the corresponding relationship is varied in accordance with the character color information that controls the color of the character to be displayed on the display device and the background information which controls the background color of the character.
