PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat transfer printer, capable of reducing the manufacturing cost of not only a ribbon cassette, but also a heat transfer printer and facilitated in the replacement of an ink ribbon, as well as a ribbon cassette, used for the printer. SOLUTION: Guide rollers 8a, 8b, 8c, 8d, 8e and a pinch roller 9 are provided on the side of the carriage 3 while a ribbon cassette 11 is provided with an ink ribbon releasing member 19, releasing the ink ribbon 5 from the engagement with the guide rollers 8a, 8b, 8c, 8d, 8e and the pinch roller 9 by separating the ink ribbon 5 from the guide rollers 8a, 8b, 8c, 8d, 8e and the pinch roller 9.
