PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polyester resin suitable for a food container, excellent in color tone, having little byproducts such as acetaldehyde and a cyclic trimer and using titanium that is excellent in environmental safety as a catalyst element. SOLUTION: The polyester resin is obtained by polymerizing a dicarboxylic acid component mainly comprising an aromatic dicarboxylic acid or its ester forming derivative and a diol component mainly comprising ethylene glycol in the presence of a catalyst containing a titanium compound to obtain a polyester resin having following properties: titanium atom content, 0.002-1.0 mol/t, intrinsic viscosity, >=0.70 dl/g, color tone (b) value, <=4, and acetaldehyde content, <=5.0 ppm.
