PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a supply medium detecting method for giving more detailed information for the number and/or type of media existing in a supply source. SOLUTION: This device comprises a medium supply stack profile generator 11 for determining the number of medium sheets existing in a supply stack and the property of the sheets and a profile analyzer. The profile generator 11 generates the images or patterns of signals showing the edges of the medium sheets and a boundary between the sheets. The images or patterns are processed by the profile analyzer 12 for determining the number of the individual sheets existing in the medium stack as well as the total height of the stack. A stack profile can contain information usable for determining the types of the media, such as reflectivity or permeability, for example, a distinction between paper and a transparent film, or information for the peculiar property of the media such as thickness or others.
