PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an anionic surfactant which comprises the sulfate ester salt of a higher alcohol alkylene oxide adduct and can prevent the deterioration of the smell and control the breeding of microbes, even when not mixed with an antioxidant and an antifungal agent, an antibacterial agent and the like, and to provide a method for storing the same. SOLUTION: This method for producing the anionic surfactant, comprising sulfating the alkylene oxide adduct of a higher alcohol and then neutralizing the product to produce the anionic surfactant, characterized by controlling the pH of the anionic surfactant aqueous solution to >=9, and the method for storing the anionic surfactant, comprising sulfating the alkylene oxide adduct of the higher alcohol, neutralizing the product and then storing the obtained anionic surfactant aqueous solution at pH 9 or larger.
