The safety device consists of a body (25) with a hook (32) to engage with a cable, rope or rail (2), an elongated aperture receiving a snap hook (21) and two pivoted cams which are actuated in the event of a fall. The cams are actuated by two fingers (42) which are fixed to the cams and located on the trajectory followed by the snap hook if the person or load connected to it falls.
