A liquid crystal display device comprises a pair of substrates (11, 12) joined with a frame-shaped sealing material (13) in between, liquid crystal (14) held between the substrates, a reflective layer (111) formed on one substrate (11) and opposed to the liquid crystal, and an alignment layer (116) formed on the reflective layer (111) and opposed to the liquid crystal. The surface of the substrate (11), opposed to the liquid crystal, includes a roughened surface area (11b) and a smooth area (11a) surrounding the roughened surface area (11b). The alignment layer (116) is formed in the roughened surface area (11b), while the sealing material (13) is formed in the smooth area (11a).
