A method of joining the two thermoplastic parts (20,30) of a battery casing, as example, uses an electric heating element wire (40) which is seated in channels (21,22) of the bottom casing (20). The casing cover (30) has a rim (31) which presses the wire (40) into the channels (21,22) when the parts are assembled. Electric current is applied to the ends of the element wire (40) using electrodes (not shown) which are inserted through apertures (25) adjacent each end of the wire (40) to heat the wire and fuse the plastic parts together at the joint after which the electrodes are withdrawn and the apertures (25) sealed, if required, using plugs or by external fusion. The advantage is that there are no protruding or exposed wires remaining and the casing can be fully sealed.
