1,245,434. Animal food. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 5 Dec., 1968 [31 Jan., 1968], No. 57872/68. Heading A2B. [Also in Divisions Cl, C3 and C6] Organic waste material suspended in a liquid medium is mixed with a culture of thermophilic aerobic micro-organisms capable of digesting the cellulose, the pH is adjusted (if necessary) to be between 5.5 and 8.5, an oxygenating gas (air) is introduced so as to maintain the dissolved oxygen content at at least 0.3 mg. per litre and the temperature is maintained in the range 45‹-80‹C, whereby the thermophilic aerobic micro-organisms multiply (whereas pathogenic micro-organisms are destroyed at these temperatures) and digest the organic waste material to produce cellular proteinaceous material containing some nucleic acids and carbohydrates. The product recovered from the culture broth may be pasteurized and used as a nitrogen and phosphorus containing high protein animal fodder. The organic waste material may be the sludge from a primary or secondary sewage treatment plant, slaughter house sewage effluent, dairy wastes, phytoplankton and zoo plankton. |
