A method of setting up a data link for data transmission between a switching centre (2) and a subscriber (1a...1n) terminal device (12a...12n) at a given data transmission rate involves initially preparing a first table with a given number of pre-set values at a given time-point (21), in which each value corresponds to a given data transmission rate. The maximum possible data transmission rate during the training phase (22) is determined, followed by adjusting the data transmission rate at the end (23) of the training phase to the next lower value in the table, which comes nearest to the ascertained data transmission rate. Any deviation between the ascertained and the adjusted or set data transmission rate is checked for whether a given value is exceeded or not, and with exceeding of a given deviation, a second table is drawn up to replace the first and the previous steps are repeated. The second table's values have a smaller deviation of the ascertained data transmission rates than the values of the first table.
