PVD process comprises forming a colored coating of several layers (16,18,20,22) which is insensitive to finger prints by arc discharge vaporization and selecting to achieve a color which corresponds to the required final color; and applying a hard material covering layer (23) to the layers using a simultaneous arc discharge vaporization and cathode and/or magnetron sputtering to give a final layer thickness of less than 500 nm. Preferred Features: Several layers of Zr and ZrCn are alternately applied to the object before applying the covering layer.
