PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a washing machine capable of saving water without decreasing its washing capability. SOLUTION: A washing machine which washes objects to be washed by intermittently rotating or rotating with the speed changed a washing tank/spin- drying basket 3 disposed in a reception cylinder so as to be rotatable, comprises a pump 14 that takes in washing water from a pump intake port 15 so as to discharge it into the tank/basket 3 from a pump discharge port 17 and circulate the same. During washing and rinsing steps, the washing water passes through the objects to be washed so as to put the dirtiness off therefrom and circulates, and thereby the washing can be made with less water. By the provision of the inlet 15 before a drainage valve 16, the washing water at the lowermost surface of the tank/basket 3 can be sucked in, and with the constitution where the pump 14 is disposed at the upper position than the drainage pipe 16 and no washing water remains stagnationwise in a pump passage 18, no washing water remains therein as well as in the pump 14, and also generation of damage of the pump 14 and generation of leakage of water at the time of freezing, as well as generation of bad smell are prevented.
