A xerographic copying machine having a photoconductive belt 12, Fig.8, has a cascade developing apparatus 14 for discharging developer on to the belt 12 bearing an electrostatic image. The apparatus includes an internal bucket conveyer 236, Fig.7, having buckets 235 which return cascaded developer to a horizontal screw conveyer (247) Fig.9 (not shown) which in turn advances the developer to a passageway 284, Fig. 8. Developer flows between a plate 220 and an adjustable plate 286 which controls the flow of developer down a tapered edge 287, and then between a developer electrode 210 and the belt 12.
