The invention relates to a method for measuring the distance and speed of objects by using electromagnetic waves in a motor vehicle radar system. According to the method, electromagnetic waves are emitted and simultaneously received. The emitted electromagnetic waves are modulated in a ramped manner. At least the signals, which are received during a rise and fall in the frequency of the emitted signal, are mixed with each emitted signal thus resulting in the formation of a number of intermediate frequency signals. The distance and speed of the object are calculated by using the intermediate frequency signals. A meteorological condition in the surrounding area of the vehicle and/or a malfunctioning of the motor vehicle radar system is determined using characteristic intermediate frequency signals.
