An improved suspension mechanism for snowmobiles. In particular, an addition al set of skis (42, 44) which provide support and stability to a snowmobile (10 ) when the snowmobile (10) is in deep powder is described. The skis (42, 44) also provide an effective structure for preventing the build-up of snow and ice in the snowmobile's suspension wells (18, 20). Additionally, a suspensio n well skirt (160) which provides a barrier from snow for a snowmobile's suspension well is described. The additional skis (42, 44), in conjunction with the skirt (160), allow a snowmobile (10) to be propelled quickly throug h deep snow as well as provide increased steerability to the snowmobile (10) when it is in deep snow.
