PURPOSE: An air conditioner with crime prevention apparatus and method for controlling operation of the apparatus is provided to perform both air conditioner function and crime monitoring function by employing a sensor for detecting invasion of any unauthorized person into the house or building and an alarm device for alarming such invasion. CONSTITUTION: A crime prevention apparatus comprises a sensor(110) mounted at an indoor unit(23) of an air conditioner(10) and which senses invasion of any unauthorized person into the house of building; an ECU(120) for comparing the value output from the sensor with a preset value; and an alarm device for alarming invasion of unauthorized person in accordance with the result of comparison performed by the ECU. A method comprises the steps of judging the operation state of the crime prevention apparatus arranged to the air conditioner; judging whether invasion has occurred by comparing the value output from the sensor with a preset value, and allowing the alarm device to generate alarm sound if invasion has occurred; and turning off the crime prevention apparatus, or allowing the crime prevention apparatus to perform its function.
