Determination of Listeria using recombinant bacteriophages

Method for detecting Listeria bacteria in a sample comprises: (a) preparing a recombinant vector contg. DNA encoding a detectable non-Listeria marker protein, where the vector is capable of transfecting Listeria bacteria; (b) incubating the sample with the vector under transfection conditions, and (c) detecting expression of the marker protein. Also claimed are: (1) a recombinant Listeria bacteriophage selected from myoviruses of morphology-type A1 contg. a luciferase gene integrated into its genome, and (2) isolated DNA obtainable by extn. from the phage of (1).
