PURPOSE:To display an image of high quality with high brightness and a high contrast ratio by providing a stop mechanism which is perpendicular to the optical axis of a projection optical system and setting the shape of the aperture part of the stop mechanism in conformity with the external frame of the shape of a distribution of the quantity of light formed in a plane containing the stop mechanism. CONSTITUTION:The luminous flux passed through a liquid crystal panel 14 form a light source image 17 similar to the shape of a light source 10 in a projection optical system 15. The stop mechanism 16 is provided at the position where the image is formed to pass only the transmitted light. Almost none of the luminous flux scattered by the liquid crystal panel 14 is made incident on the stop mechanism 16, so only the transmitted light is imaged on a screen. The shapes of the light emission parts of a metal halide lamp and a halogen lamp are generally cylindrical, so the light source image 17 is formed in a cylindrical shape on the surface of the stop mechanism 16. For the purpose, the shape of the aperture part is determined in conformity with the shape of the light source image to pass all of the transmitted light and minimize the passage of scattered light. |
