PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fiber array having optical fiber tips in uniform shapes by using a V-groove substrate which has the same composition with optical fiber cores or similar composition. SOLUTION: This optical fiber array includes a quartz substrate 1 having grooves in which optical fibers 2, 2,..., 2 are arrayed and received and optical fiber ends which are arrayed, adhered, and fixed to the substrate 1. The substrate and fiber ends are polished and made smooth and the optical fiber core tips are so machined as to protrude from the optical fiber clads by making use of the difference in etching speed between the substrate and optical fiber core tips. The optical fiber array is polished by a machine after being etched chemically to obtain the optical fiber array which is 0.1 to 2.0μm in the projection quantity of the core parts of the optical fibers on the end surfaces and suitable for PC connection.
