PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide device and method for enhancing reproducing performance by adjusting a filter coefficient of an equalizer. SOLUTION: This device is constituted so that a level corresponding to a reference level used in a viterbi detector is detected from among output values of the equalizer consisting of a digital filter connected to a preceding stage of the viterbi detector, and a level error between the detected level and a prescribed reference value is detected, and the filter coefficient of the equalizer is adjusted to that the level error becomes minimum, thus the data detection performance of the viterbi detector is enhanced.
