PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify constitution for inserting and discharging a filter, to satisfactorily read a dust/flaw detecting image and to speedily read the image. SOLUTION: Transmitted light from a light transmitting original recording medium 1 based on light from the first light source 5 emitting light at least in the visible region is led to a solid state image pickup element 11 through an infrared cut filter 12 to read image information recorded in the medium on the basis of a signal obtained from the element 11. Transmitted light from the medium 1 on the basis of light from the second light source 6 emitting light at least in the infrared region is led to the element 11 without using the filter 12 to read defect information on the recording medium itself existing in the medium 1 except for recorded image information. Then, the red defect information is removed from the read image information.
